Dodgers Rumors: Red Sox Want Top Prospect For Jon Lester

[new_royalslider id=”249″] General manager Ned Colletti has acknowledged if the Los Angeles Dodgers were to add an elite player to their roster such as, David Price or Jon Lester, it would require them to trade away one or multiple top prospects.

The Dodgers aren’t believed to be interested in wiping out their farm system, though Colletti did leave some wiggle room with recent comments that implied the team would consider shipping out a prospect if it meant improving.

Reports have the Dodgers interested in multiple pitchers, including a pair of Boston Red Sox starters, Price and newly-available, Cole Hamels.

According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the Dodgers are the perceived favorite to acquire Lester, but it may cost them one of their prized prospects:

The Red Sox are said to want top shortstop prospect Corey Seager or top outfielder prospect Joc Pederson back for Lester, and it’s questionable whether LA would consider even Pederson, much less Seager, who’s thought to be basically untouchable, especially for a rental.

While one executive believes the Dodgers are the best fit for Lester, another can’t picture the team including Seager as part of any deal:

I can’t see a scenario where [the Dodgers] move Seager,” one rival executive said.

One report had the Red Sox considering a trade for Matt Kemp, whom they’ve previously been interested in. Dave Stewart, Kemp’s agent, went so far as to state he was hopeful the outfielder would get traded and identified Boston as his preference.

The defending World Series champions were also one of two teams who recently scouted pitcher Chris Anderson. Further complicating whether or not the Dodgers would part ways with one of their top prospects is Lester’s contract is up after this season.

However, given Yasiel Puig’s recent move to center field, it may make Pederson more expendable than once believed. That is guaranteed however, as manager Don Mattingly called Pederson the best center fielder in the organization.

Given their resources — both financial and in terms of prospects — the Dodgers are considered the favorites to land one of the pitchers available before Thursday’s deadline. Whether that’ll be enough of an influence to pull the trigger on a trade remains to be seen.

  1. Definitely not worth trading any of our top prospects for a rental like Lester who confessed he’d most likely re-signs with Boston. About 50+ games remaining, it’s just not worth losing potential All-Stars in the next 5-7 seasons. I wouldn’t mind Lackey for a middle-to-lower tier prospects.
