Dodgers Rumors: Ricky Nolasco Reportedly Seeking $80 Million In FA

The Los Angeles Dodgers have 10 free agents of their own, including right-handed starter Ricky Nolasco. Nolasco was acquired in early July from the Miami Marlins and impressed in his first 12 starts.

However, Nolasco faltered down the stretch with a record of 2-2 and a 6.66 ERA as he was bumped from his Game 4 NLDS start while he took the loss in Game 4 of the NLCS. Once considered a strong possibility to re-sign, Nolasco is seeking quite the contract according to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com:

Free-agent right-hander Ervin Santana is seeking more than $100 million on a five-year deal, and righty Ricky Nolasco $80 million over the same term, according to major league sources.

While Nolasco was considered the number one starter during his tenure in Miami, for most teams, he’s looked at as a back end of the rotation arm. During his career, Nolasco is 89-75 with a 4.37 ERA, but has been durable as he’s averaging 164 innings in his eight professional seasons.

It remains to be seen if the Dodgers have any intention to re-sign Nolasco, but the Minnesota Twins have already expressed an interest in signing him. The starting pitcher market is considerably weak this season as the Dodgers number one target seems to be Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka.

Tanaka is still waiting to be posted by his Japanese team as MLB and the NPB (Nippon Professional Baseball) have yet to come to an agreement about the posting system. The Dodgers might be looking at putting down a $70 million posting fee for the right to exclusively negotiate a contract with him.

Regardless, if Nolasco is going to ask for $80 million over five years, it’s hard to see the Dodgers shelling out that much money for a back end of the rotation pitcher.
