Dodgers Rumors Roundup: Shelby Miller and Aroldis Chapman in Dodger Blue?

On Saturday the main topic of discussion was Chris Sale and where he would be going after being pulled from his start. The conversation took a weird turn when it was released that he was pulled not because he was being traded, but because he destroyed the team’s throwback jerseys because he did not want to wear them. Not as exciting as a trade, but entertaining nonetheless.

Other than Sale, Aroldis Chapman was the talk of the town as reports flooded in saying that the Yankees were ready to trade him! Many assumed that this meant a deal was being worked out, but instead no deal was in the process and the Yankees are simply putting him on the market.

With that, sources also noted that New York would prefer to keep fellow reliever, Andrew Miller.

Aroldis Chapman has had a great career so far! So far this season, the Yankess reliever has a 2.01 ERA with 20 saves and 44 strike outs. Chapman is a free agent at the end of the year, so New York is looking to move him now!

The Yankees aren’t the only team trying to get rid of a pitcher, however. On Sunday, the Diamondbacks announced that they will be looking to trade Shelby Miller, and probably for cheap! Robert Murray of Today’s Kunckleball incurred not too long ago that the Dodgers were one of the teams interested in the young starting pitcher.

Shelby Miller has had quite the poor 2016 season so far, acquiring a 2-9 record with a 7.14 ERA in 14 games. Miller has talent as seen in his previous years, and may just need an exceptional pitching program to flourish. Being that he is only 25 years old, maybe the front office views him as an investment.

Both of these pitchers are reportedly being looked at by the Dodgers when neither will really solve their current problems. The bullpen is one of the best in baseball so Chapman won’t be making much of an impact there. Starting pitching is definitely a concern for the Dodgers, but Miller looks to be more of a project as opposed to an impact player. The front office continues using the word “impact” when describing their trade deadline pickups; however, it will take more than Chapman and Miller to help lead this team to the postseason.

  1. Love the idea of Chapman joining the bullpen. If the Front office is truly considering this trade, they need to talk to Jansen, if anything, out of respect. They should learn from their mistakes the first time around when they almost got Chapman in the off season and hurt Jansen’s feelings. They should work out who the closer is going to be before hand. Both will be free agents after this season so the Dodger better sign at least one of them. There’s no way the Dodgers can afford to let both sign with other teams.

  2. Arodc03  Well Chapman is off the board.  The Cubs incurred a huge cost to acquire Chapman.  Gleybar Torres (Cubs #1) and Billy McKinney (Cubs #5), plus a return of Adam Warren, is a steep price for a rental.  I am sure that Theo believes the cost is worth it to increase their odds at a WS.  Plus they may look at extending him.  At the very least they will give him a QO and get an additional 1st round pick, that they do not squander.  No way do the Dodgers get in that discussion.

I am not as enamored with Kenley Jansen as you may be.  His job is to close, and he has 5 blown saves.  One less than the MLB leader in blown saves.  Dodger hitters are catching a lot of grief with their hitting WRISP, and rightfully so, but Jansen’s one job is to save games.  He has come into games with a one run lead on 13 occasions, and blown 5 of those games.  He is lights out with 2 or more run lead, as he was last night with a three run lead..  But IMO that is not a closer.  I would re-sign Kenley, but nothing more than David Robertson type contract.  Last year the Phillies dealt Papelbon and Giles, and now Jeanmar Gomez is their closer with 26 saves and 3 blown.  The Dodgers needed a closer when they found Kenley.  Maybe next year it is Frankie Montas or Adam Liberatore; or maybe they will sign Chapman.  They will have a closer, but they will not overpay for one.

  3. Yea, Jansen’s has blowen some games but I don’t think that will deter teams from pursuing him in the off season. I still think he’s the best option for the Dodgers if they can sign him. Chapman will be the top closer on the market if the Cubs don’t extend him and will draw more interest and be more expensive than Jansen. And while the Dodgers may already have Jansen’s replacement, they would be rolling the dice with anybody else they currently have. The Dodgers have so many holes why allow Jansen to walk and create yet another one?

  4. I’m not so impressed with Miller’s stats.  During the past four years his strikeout to walk ratio and his ERA numbers have been going the wrong direction in three out of four of those years.  I don’t think he qualify’s as an impact player but rather a work in progress, something i don’t believe we need.  Why gamble that Chapman will do what Jansen has already proven he can do, and he does it well, albeit he has several blown saves.  Keep Jansen.  So many of these problems can be reduced if the hitting was more consistent.
