Dodgers Rumors: Stan Kasten Says New Player To Join Camp Soon

6918886Los Angeles Dodgers’ team president Stan Kasten was one of the speakers at a town hall meeting at Dodger Stadium to give the people an update and some insight into the team’s future plans.

In the past week, the Dodgers filled a couple needs with infielder Justin Turner and starting pitcher Paul Maholm, but it was reported that the team was still in the market for another shortstop.

According to Pedro Moura of the OC Register, Kasten added some intrigue to spring training with an announcement:

The mystery surrounding the player leaves many to wonder who it could be. Some believe that it could be an international player that may be restricted from signing until a certain date, hence the mystery. Cuban shortstop Aledmys Diaz was scouted by the Dodgers and fits the profile of what the team is looking for. He’s ineligible to sign until February 19 and could report then. The Dodgers also attended a workout for Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo in the Dominican Republic, but like Diaz, isn’t cleared to sign.

Also, reports have pegged the Dodgers as a possible destination for infielder Emilio Bonifacio, who was released by the Kansas City Royals. Bonifacio can play second and third base, shortstop and outfield, as well as bring a speed element that would play well in the later innings. He was placed on waivers this afternoon and if a team claims him, they’re on the hook for his remaining $3.5 million salary for 2014.

Besides the infield, the Dodgers have great depth at most positions and it’s unlikely that they bring in another player at any of the other positions. As of now, the team is counting on Alex Guerrero at second base with Dee Gordon, Justin Turner, Justin Sellers, Miguel Rojas and Chone Figgins to compete at second and a reserve spot in infield. Pitchers and catchers reported to camp on Saturday and position players begin camp on Thursday, meaning the deal could come this week at the earliest.
