Dodgers Rumors: Team Met With Ben Zobrist

Thus far, the Dodgers have added a starting pitcher, a closer and still have a bit of work to do to make these Winter Meetings complete: second base and in the outfield.

Ben Zobrist plays both of those places.

So, it makes sense the Dodgers met with the former Royal and Ray.

CBS’ Jon Heyman wrote this about a possible match between the two sides.

The Dodgers met Sunday on Zobrist, so they’re the “mystery” fourth team. The Mets, Nats, and Giants are all in on Zobrist. All understand it will take a four-year deal to secure his services.

The Dodgers are a tough fit because they are deep at second base and on the outfield corners, where Zobrist is best suited to play. They do, however, have the Andrew Friedman connection with Zobrist. Friedman, now the President of Baseball Operations with the Dodgers, was in the Rays front office when Zobrist was with Tampa.

Another angle that makes Zobrist intriguing to the Dodgers is that he wouldn’t cost a compensatory draft pick. The Dodgers received one when Greinke departed for Arizona, but had to give up a pick for signing Hisashi Iwakuma on Sunday.

The Dodgers have reportedly said they prefer a left-handed hitting second-baseman so with all factors considered, a deal between the two sides makes a ton of sense. Zobrist reportedly wants to sign before the end of the Winter Meetings, so news on this front may start to roll in pretty quickly.

Since landing in Nashville, the Dodgers have been incredibly active. This trend will undoubtedly continue all week.
