Dodgers Rumors: Trade Market For Relief Pitchers Heating Up

With three days left until the July 31 trade deadline, the Dodgers seem to be locked into finding another reliever to add to their bullpen.

The Dodgers have had scouts looking at the Milwaukee Brewers earlier and continue to do so as John Axford could be a potential trade candidate.

However, it sounds like the Brewers are starting to do their due diligence on the Dodgers farm system according to Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com:

The Tigers and Dodgers have both heavily scouted the Brewers, and the Brewers had scouts following the Dodgers’ and Diamondbacks’ minor-league teams in recent days. Axford’s $5 million salary has scared off some teams, but likely wouldn’t be a problem for the Dodgers, and may not be for the Tigers, either.

Before trading reliever Francisco Rodriguez to the Orioles, the Dodgers had high interest in him, but could turn their efforts towards trading for Axford.

After being replaced in the closer’s role, Axford has responded nicely as he didn’t allow a run in 10.2 innings in June and has a 1.93 ERA in 9.1 so far in July.

Last night, it was reported that the Rangers could be looking to trade closer Joe Nathan and the Dodgers could be a match with their abundance of outfielders.

General manager Ned Colletti also is intrigued by former Giants closer Brian Wilson as it’s quite clear the Dodgers are set on adding a bullpen piece in the coming days.

  1. Don’t rule out Papelbon either, if Ruben Amaro can swing a deal to shed some of his salary and get back an OF prospect it could be the big name headline the Dodgers love. This article discusses it further from @PeoplezPen Trade Deadline Dandy’s http://wp.me/p38eso-1I
