Dodgers Send Several Top Prospects To Instructional League

PAGES: 1 | 2 | 3

The sad part about this time of the year is the Minor League season has all but come to an end. Fortunately, each September, organizations call many of their most promising prospects to their spring training facilities for Instructional League.

Instructs, as it’s called, is a time for the organization to give special attention to their most prized young players in an effort to coax a little more development out of them. This year, the Los Angeles Dodgers have called 60 players to Glendale, Ariz., to continue learning after the season has officially ended.

Let’s take a look at some of the most interesting prospects who made the squad, and a few who didn’t.

Missing In Action

While it’s understandable top hitting prospect Corey Seager won’t be in attendance, with his obligation to the big club being slightly more pressing at the moment, there are a few other frontline prospects who won’t be trekking to Arizona this month.

Top pitching prospects Julio Urias and Jose De Leon are not included on the roster. Urias, who missed two months in the middle of the season after undergoing elective surgery on his eye, is a prime candidate for fall or winter ball.

De Leon, who missed time with a back issue, could join Urias in pitching for an offseason league. Also not appearing on the list are Jharel Cotton and Chris Anderson, who were promoted to Triple-A Oklahoma City late in the season in hopes of earning a September call-up.

Top Bats Still In Play

While they’re focused on bringing home a California League title, three of the Dodgers’ better hitting prospects are primed to join Instructs after their playoff run. Cody Bellinger, the 2013 fourth-rounder, hit 30 home runs during the regular season for High-A Rancho Cucamonga, adding another pair in the playoffs thus far.

Alex Verdugo, drafted in the second round last year, hit .311 on the season, including .385 in 23 regular season games with the Quakes. Willie Calhoun, drafted in the fourth round this June, skyrocketed up the Minors this season, hitting .316 over three levels and batting .329 in 20 games with Rancho.

  1. Hopefully puig and Pedersen are at the top to go to the instructional league of needing proper instruction. Mcguire definitely did not do them any favors.
