One of the biggest things the new Los Angeles Dodgers front office focused on this offseason was depth.

What former general manager Ned Colletti failed to do in his years at the helm, was prepare for the worst when constructing his rosters. Last season he was forced to trade for Roberto Hernandez and Kevin Correia in August instead of going to the minors. This winter, Andrew Friedman and Farhan Zaidi have made a series of small moves that addressed depth issues.

According to the official Twitter account of Onyx Sports Management, the Dodgers made another small signing that could potentially help:

Horst, 29, was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 21st round of the 2007 amateur draft. He made his major league debut in 2011, but was later traded to the Philadelphia Phillies during that offseason.

He spent the entire 2014 season with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, an affiliate for the Phillies. In 45 games, he posted a 3.98 ERA in 63.1 innings pitched with 57 strikeouts and 31 walks. Prior to last season, Horst spent a fair amount of time on the Phillies’ active roster, appearing in 60 games from 2012-2013. His most successful season in the majors was 2012, in which he posted a 1.15 ERA and 2.39 FIP in 31.1 innings pitched, good enough for 0.9 WAR.

Although Horst did not receive an invitation to major league camp, he will most likely get an opportunity to pitch in relief for Triple-A Oklahoma City this season. If he proves to be effective, it won’t be unheard of if the Dodgers call him up at some point in 2015.

  1. Well this guy may help eventually ( next year? ) but still say they need a situational miss the bat guy to save an inning or for 2/3 of an inning to get out of trouble.

  2. Insurance only….AAA guy, have seen him pitch a couple of times..nothing earth shattering here……
