Dodgers Spring Training: Corey Seager Ignoring Outside Pressure

Of the 62 players the Los Angeles Dodgers have in Spring Training this year, 20 are non-roster invitees. Included in that group are players with an outside shot of making the roster and some prospects who are projected to make an impact down the line.

For Corey Seager, this marks his first time in big league camp, which is an experience he’s enjoying. “It’s been fun. It’s always nice to be on this side,” he said. “You get treated awesome and to hang out with the big names like this, it’s always a good time.”

Heading into Saturday, Seager’s appeared in four of the Dodgers’ five games — going 1-for-5 with four walks and two runs scored. The 20-year-old shortstop (21 on April 27) is regarded as one of the club’s best prospects, which has come with “The Future” label attached to him.

Difficult as it may seem, the outside noise isn’t something Seager has given any mind to. “To be honest I don’t pay much attention to the off-the-field stuff. I just try to go about your business on the field and let all that stuff take care of itself,” he said.

The Dodgers’ projected future shortstop said he’s learned from Darwin Barney and Jimmy Rollins, among others, on how to prepare and conduct himself. Seager’s yet to reach the Majors, but that could change come September when active rosters expand.

  1. Unless he does not adjust well to AAA I cannot imagine he is not in the Majors next year. He will be 22 by the time next season starts. It will be interesting to see how they fill 3rd base and 2nd next year. I think they offer Kendrick a contract but we will see. If Guererro plays third as a back-up for Uribe he may have a shot at it next year if he can field the position and continue to hit.
