Dodgers Trade Rumors: Is a Dodgers Trade with Evan Longoria Realistic?

With the trade deadline coming up in the next two weeks, it is a crucial time for the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers have been hit with injuries, and hope to bring in some reinforcements.

Trade rumors surfaced that the Tampa Bay Rays are in talks with the Dodgers about putting a trade in place, according to MLB.com’s Jon Paul Morosi.

Rumor Report: Dodgers Checking in on Rich Hill, Jake Odorizzi and Matt Moore

In his article Morosi says that for the Rays, third baseman Evan Longoria could be in the discussion. However, Morosi then added that the chances of him being dealt aren’t as realistic.

[Justin] Turner is among the biggest barriers to a Longoria trade over the next two weeks. He’s popular in the clubhouse and integral to the lineup, with a .942 OPS since June 1. It’s unclear if the Dodgers would be willing to move Turner to second base for the remainder of the season in order to clear room for Longoria, a two-time American League Gold Glove Award winner at third base.

The Dodgers may calculate — reasonably — that there’s little chance of Longoria being dealt to another team prior to Aug. 1. The Astros had been in the market for a third baseman, but that is no longer the case following Friday’s deal with Cuban free agent Yulieski Gurriel. TheGiants have had interest in Longoria before, but they’re not believed to be engaged in active talks with the Rays about him now.

We asked fans on Twitter if the Dodgers should deal away Turner to make the trade happen.

Dodgers Should Show Kenley Jansen the Money

Longoria is 30-years-old and after this season is guaranteed $99 million over the next six years. He is also on his way to obtain full no-trade rights as a 10-and-5 player early in the 2018 season.

It’s unclear if the Dodgers want to take on such a high contract, but they do have to address the multiple positions in their infield.

Opening Day 2017 isn’t as far as one thinks. The Dodgers have a couple of free agents on their current roster including closer Kenley Jansen. After this season third baseman Justin Turner and second baseman Chase Utley will also be hitting the free agency market.
