Dodgers Video: Don Mattingly Ejected After Unsuccessful Challenge
While the Los Angeles Dodgers sit in first place in the National League West and have one of the best records in baseball, their success hasn’t come without bumps along the away. Aside from the assortment of injuries they’ve had to endure, replay challenges have been a point of contention for manager Don Mattingly.
Mattingly on multiple occasions this season has voiced his support and belief in the need for reform to the replay review process. In particular, he isn’t too keen on the reviewer, stationed at the MLB offices in New York, leaning on the initial call made.
Heading into Wednesday’s game with the Miami Marlins, the Dodgers were the beneficiary of a the most recent challenge they were involved in as the Colorado Rockies were unsuccessful in getting an out at home plate overturned. The Dodgers had no such luck in the series finale against the Marlins, however.
With the Dodgers trailing 2-0 in the fourth inning, Howie Kendrick hit a sinking liner that Giancarlo Stanton made a diving catch on, or so it was ruled. Mattingly challenged the call and after a somewhat lengthy review, it was upheld.
Upset with the decision, Mattingly began to yell from the dugout steps and was ejected after throwing his hat to the ground. He then emerged from the Dodgers dugout to get a final say in before retreating to the clubhouse.
I saw the replay, and Donnie was right……I agree that the folks in NY @ MLB should only look at the replay, not be aware of the initial call and make their own judgement instead of “reinforcing” the error in the field.
replay is not working… how anyone can watch that and not clearing see the ball BOUNCE in to his glove is beyond me.

MLB called the next day with a hollow “we’re sorry, we screwed up”. The Dodgers should be granted an appeal & game continued with Howie on first. But we all know that will never happen.
