Dodger Stadium isn’t regarded as a hitter’s park, particularly at night, but both the Los Angeles Dodgers and Seattle Mariners put that theory to the test Monday night with Brandon McCarthy and James Paxton playing the victims.

Nelson Cruz got the home run derby started in the first inning with a slicing two-run home run that cleared the short fence in right field by a few rows. The homer gave the Mariners a 2-0 lead and again put the Dodgers in an early deficit, which has been a common theme thus far in the season.

Cruz added to the Mariners’ lead with his second home run of the game off McCarthy, this time just clearing the right-center field fence with a solo shot in the fourth inning. Kyle Seager followed with a solo home run of his own and the Mariners led 4-0 before McCarthy could get out of the fourth inning.

McCarthy’s home run total increased in the fifth as Dustin Ackley hit a solo home run to right-center field that Yasiel Puig merely turned to watch sail over the fence. While the Dodgers got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, their first home run of the game didn’t come until the fifth.

It was courtesy of Puig, who deposited Paxton’s first pitch nearly halfway up the bleachers in left-center field. The home run was Puig’s second of the season, second in as many games and moved him to 2-for-3 with a run scored on the night.
