On Saturday, the Los Angeles Dodgers played game two of the annual Freeway Series against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. With Saturday also marking the first day of August, it commemorates the start of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis awareness month, otherwise known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The biggest format and method now used to raise money and awareness is with the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Last year millions posted video of themselves taking the challenge and it led to record dollars being raised.

The Los Angeles Dodgers participated and challenged each other and other franchises to get involved. Among the Dodgers to help raise awareness were president and CEO Stan Kasten, former Dodger Orel Hershiser, and in one of the more lighthearted challenges, Hyun-Jin Ryu and Juan Uribe.

The Boston Red Sox kicked off the awareness campaign this year and issued challenges to Dodgers, musician Zac Brown and Red Sox Nation. The Dodgers didn’t take long to respond as Kiké Hernandez and Yasiel Puig took the plunge on a hot afternoon in Los Angeles.

  1. I am 63 yrs old, a native of California, our family starting following the Dodgers when they moved to LA. I also have ALS, diagnosed 2 years ago. Last time in Dodger Stadium was against Atlanta last summer, we won, Puig was going for cycle last at bat, and Mr Scully announced he was going to stay working. I appreciate the Sox challenging you and you guys stepping up. I love the Dodgers and all the history they have been involved in. It has been a highlight of my life. I am grateful for everyday, but mostly when you’re on TV, I live in Oregon. The very best of everything as you work towards post season play. Again, thank you for your contributions towards this disease.
