Dodgers Vs. Cubs Recap: Dan Haren Can’t Solve Woes

[new_royalslider id=”266″] After getting skipped over in his last scheduled start, Dan Haren took the mound Friday looking to put an end to his four-game losing streak and add another in the win column for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Haren allowed nothing more than a single in the first inning, which has been troublesome for him — evident by his 7.29 ERA in the first inning of games this season. Dee Gordon reached on an infield single and promptly stole his 49th and 50th bases to reach third with one out.

Hanley Ramirez hit a would-be double play ball to Starlin Castro, but the Chicago Cubs shortstop threw the ball into right field. Gordon easily scored on the play, but Adrian Gonzalez was thrown out. Gonzalez slid awkwardly into home and was removed from the game in the third inning with a knee contusion.

The Dodger lead was short lived as Haren surrendered a solo home run to Luis Valbuena to lead off the second inning. The Cubs took the lead in the third inning behind Ryan Sweeney’s RBI single to right that scored Anthony Rizzo and Castro on Matt Kemp’s throwing error to third.

Haren’s wild pitch allowed a third run to score in the inning and the Cubs led 4-1 going into the bottom of the third. Hendricks kept the Dodgers quiet in the third and fourth and the Cubs then found more success against Dodgers pitching in the fifth.

Haren first hit Rizzo with a pitch and the Cubs loaded the bases on a pair of singles. Manager Don Mattingly brough the hook and Chris Perez inherited the one-out jam. Welington Castillo hit an RBI single off the center field wall and Nate Schierholtz extended the lead to 6-1 on a sacrifice fly.

A Perez wild pitch allowed both runners to move into scoring position and Hendricks’ infield single off Perez’s leg pushed another across for the Cubs. Castro hit a two-out double in the sixth and scored on Valbuena’s single to give the Cubs an 8-1 lead.

The Dodgers had two runners reach in the sixth inning with one out and Puig scored on Ramirez’s fielder’s choice. He had to earn it after not stopping at third and working to avoid Castillo’s tag attempts. However, it came at a price as Puig was subsequently removed from the game.

Paul Maholm, Brian Wilson and Jamey Wright kept the Cubs scoreless in the final three innings, but the Dodgers weren’t able to muster any offense and had their six-game winning streak snapped with the 8-2 loss.

  1. The Dodgers need to release Haren,Perez and upgrade tthe catching position.AJ Ellis is hitting under two hundred and just about an automatie out each at bat.At best i think the Dodgers need at least one more starting pitcher and a couple RP.
