With the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks meeting for the final time this season at Chase Field, neither team’s starter was particularly sharp in the opening frame.

Wade Miley had to work through full counts to the first three batters he faced. Dee Gordon struck out to begin the game, Yasiel Puig drew a walk, and Matt Kemp also struck out. Miley then got Hanley Ramirez to ground out.

Clayton Kershaw issued a leadoff walk to Ender Inciarte on four pitches, but worked around it to retire the next three batters he faced, including Mark Trumbo after Inciarte stole second base.

Justin Turner drew a one-out walk in the second inning, which was followed by an A.J. Ellis single. However, the Dodgers were unable to capitalize as Miguel Rojas hit into a fielder’s choice and Kershaw grounded to first base for the third out.

After Kershaw retired the Diamondbacks in order in the second, Gordon attempted to ignite the Dodgers offense in the third. The speedy leadoff hitter reached on a bunt single and promptly stole second base.

Miley walked Puig on four pitches and was stung by a two-run double from Kemp, who was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple. With two outs in the inning, Scott Van Slyke extended the Dodgers lead to 3-0 with a solo home run to left field.

Didi Gregorious reached on a leadoff single in the bottom of the third and he was moved over to second base on Miley’s sacrifice bunt. Inciarte’s single to left put runners on the corners with one out and Kershaw made his job more difficult by walking Cliff Pennington to load the bases.
