Dodgers Vs. Giants Preview: Maholm Starts, Uribe Out Of The Lineup

The Los Angeles Dodgers logged yet another extra-inning game last night as they fell to the San Francisco Giants 3-1. The Dodgers have only won in three of the nine games that have gone extras this season, and their relievers are noticeably worn down as the bullpen currently leads the league in losses. Now 3.5 games behind their NL West rivals, the Dodgers look to close the gap in the next three games of the series at home.

Left-hander Paul Maholm looks for his second win of the season as he takes the mound for the Dodgers tonight. The team has not had a perfectly healthy starting rotation all year, and Maholm has assumed the role as the fifth starter six times already this season. Aside from two shaky starts, the 31-year-old has proven to be a more reliable starter than many initially expected. Maholm’s first start of the season came against the Giants and he labored through 4.1 innings of work, allowing five runs on seven hits. The left-hander seemed much more at ease in his most recent outing against San Francisco, throwing six innings and allowing just one run.

On the mound for the Giants is the dominant left-hander Madison Bumgarner. The 24-year-old has also faced the Dodgers twice this year and has gone 1-1, allowing four runs over 10.2 innings of work. In his most recent start, Bumgarner allowed just three hits in six shutout innings. With a grand slam under his belt for good measure, the Giants starter is a versatile pitcher that will challenge the Dodgers today.

Don Mattingly fills the lineup with his three right-handed outfielders in Matt Kemp, Yasiel Puig and Scott Van Slyke. The Dodgers manager has taken the same approach the last two times the team faced Bumgarner despite the fact that the outcome was not too successful; the three outfielders have collectively gone 4-for-22 against the left-hander.

With Juan Uribe leaving the game early last night due to tightness in his hamstring, Justin Turner takes over at third base tonight and will bat behind Miguel Olivo, who assumes the seven spot. Adrian Gonzalez bats clean up tonight and Dee Gordon remains the leadoff man.
