Dodgers Vs. Giants Recap: Puig Has Historic Night In Win

[new_royalslider id=”244″] Yasiel Puig made his return to the lineup Friday and started in center field for the first time this season and seventh time in his career.

Puig didn’t waste much time in announcing his return as he hit a one-out triple in the first inning. Adrian Gonzalez followed with an RBI single to give the Los Angeles Dodgers an early 1-0 lead.

Pitching with the one-run lead, Zack Greinke began his Dodger debut at AT&T Park in impressive fashion. Greinke didn’t allow a hit until one out in the fourth inning and collected four strikeouts in the third.

In what appeared to just be a one-out single by Greinke in the fifth inning wound up igniting a Dodger rally. Dee Gordon followed with an RBI triple and he promptly scored on Puig’s second triple of the night.

Gonzalez tacked on another run with an RBI single to right, which was his second of the game, and the Dodgers took a 4-0 lead. Hanley Ramirez took out some of his frustration on a single to left and Matt Kemp cleared the bases with a two-RBI triple off the right field fence.

After the San Francisco Giants failed to generate any offense in the bottom of the fifth, Puig elevated his night from impressive to historic in the sixth. This time facing Juan Gutierrez, Puig tripled once again to right-center.

Gordon scored on the play and Puig became the second Dodger to hit three triples in a single game since Jimmy Sheckard did so in 1901. It gave the Dodgers five triples, which was last done by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1921.

Pitching a seven-run lead, Greinke continued to blank the Giants and struck out the side in the sixth inning. In what was his final inning of work, Greinke retired the side in order in the seventh.

Andre Ethier pinch-hit for Greinke in the eighth and drew a leadoff walk. He later scored on a Ramirez RBI single and the Dodgers took an 8-0 lead. Chris Perez pitched a scoreless eighth inning, then the ball was handed to Paul Maholm in the ninth, who struggled a bit.

The left-hander walked a batter and allowed consecutive singles to load the bases with one out. Maholm then allowed an RBI single before he could finish out the game and the Dodgers won, 8-1.
