Dodgers Vs. Marlins Preview: Josh Beckett Faces Former Team

The Los Angeles Dodgers travel to warmer weather today in their next road series against the Miami Marlins after sweeping the Minnesota Twins in chilly Minneapolis weather. Coming off a doubleheader, which included a game played into the 12th inning, the Dodgers look to fight fatigue on top of the travel for their week long east coast road trip. The Dodgers hope to regroup and find a resurgence of energy as they look to extend their wining streak to four games.

The Dodgers made a handful of roster changes yet again heading into today’s game. Chone Figgins returns to the team as he makes the start at third base, and Jose Dominguez has been called back up as Paco Rodriguez goes back to the minors. The roster shuffling, while a luxury to some extent, can cause heightened stress and inconsistency for the players for a ball club that already seems to have a different starting lineup everyday. In some instances, such as the case with Hyun-Jin Ryu being placed on the disabled list, a move is absolutely necessary.

On the mound for the Dodgers today is former Marlin Josh Beckett. Drafted by the Marlins as the second overall pick in the 1999 draft, the right-hander established himself as a dominant pitcher in Florida, earning the World Series MVP in 2003. As he returns to Miami, Beckett enters the game with a 2.45 ERA and is coming off eight strong innings in his last outing. As long as Beckett stays healthy, he should continue to prove himself as an asset.

The veteran faces off against Miami’s Tom Koehler, who will be making his second career start against the Dodgers tonight. The 27-year-old right-hander has fared well in his five starts on the season so far, accumulating a 2.97 ERA. In his last start against the San Diego Padres, Koehler went six innings and allowed just two runs.

With Figgins playing third, Juan Uribe takes the day off. Miguel Olivo makes his second start in three games since being called up from the minors. In Olivo’s first game with the team yesterday, he went 2-for-3 with a run scored run.
