The Los Angeles Dodgers were looking for the sweep on Wednesday as they played the series finale against the Miami Marlins. With Paul Maholm on the mound, the Dodgers got off on the wrong foot early in the game.

Although he breezed through the first inning, Maholm gave up back-to-back singles to Reed Johnson and Garrett Jones to begin the second. He was able to secure one out, but Jeff Mathis hit a single to left that loaded the bases. Dee Gordon committed an error in the next at-bat, allowing Johnson and Jones to score.

Christian Yelich hit a sacrifice fly to score Mathis, and Ed Lucas followed with a two-run home run. As if Maholm hadn’t already had a difficult inning, he then gave up a double to Giancarlo Stanton, who was later sent home on a Jeff Baker base hit. By the end of the inning, the Marlins led 6-0.

Anthony DeSclafani gave up just two hits through the first two innings as Maholm regained composure in the top of the third allowing just one walk and no hits. Dee Gordon, who stole his 25th base of the season in the third, was the only Dodger to get on base during the inning. Maholm loaded the bases in the fourth, which resulted in a run scored after Baker hit into a double play. With Lucas on base, Johnson went yard, giving the Marlins the 9-0 advantage.

With two outs left in the third and a runner on second, Chris Perez came out of the bullpen and was unable to immediately record the final out. He gave up a base hit to Adeiny Hechavarria and then allowed Mathis to go yard and the Marlins extended their lead to 12 runs. DeSclafani gave up just one hit to Justin Turner in a scoreless fourth inning.

Chris Withrow entered the game in the fifth. After issuing a leadoff walk to Yelich, the reliever gave up singles to Stanton and Baker with just one out to load the bases. Withrow was able to force Johnson into a double play to end the inning. The Dodgers put themselves on the board in the fifth beginning with a double from pinch-hitter Juan Uribe. Puig followed with an RBI double that extended his hitting streak to 14 games.

The score was 12-1 heading into the sixth, and Brian Wilson replaced Withrow on the mound. After giving up a walk and a single to start the inning, Wilson gave up an RBI single to DeSclafani. With another run on the board for Miami, Carl Crawford hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 13-2. Brandon League and Randy Wolf both entered the game in the seventh and worked through scoreless outings.

Heading into the eighth, Jamey Wright retired the batters in order as Wolf remained in the game for the Marlins. Chone Figgins hit a leadoff double, and Andre Ethier hit a line drive to send Figgins home to put three runs on the board for Los Angeles. In the ninth, the Dodgers looked to preserve their bullpen as they put Drew Butera on the mound. The catcher impressively retired the batters in order as Wolf closed the game as the Marlins won, 13-3.
