Dodgers Vs. Mets Recap: Haren, Offense Show Up In Win
Coming off a rough outing, Dan Haren found himself in a deficit after facing the first batter of the game. Curtis Granderson hit his seventh leadoff home run this season and the Mets held a 1-0 lead at the end of the top of the first.
Haren recovered to keep the Mets off the board in the second inning and again in the third, when he struck out the side. Meanwhile, Jonathon Niese pitched two innings of shutout baseball.
A.J. Ellis drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of third and it was followed by an Erisbel Arruebarrena single that put two on with none out for the Dodgers. Haren’s failed sacrifice bunt attempt resulted in a 1-5-3 double play that left Arruebarrena standing on second base.
Dee Gordon delivered a two-out RBI single and the game was tied at the end of three innings. After a Daniel Murhpy strikeout to leadoff the fourth, David Wright reached safely on a Justin Turner error.
Haren didn’t let the mishap cost him as he induced an inning-ending double play. The Dodger starter then breezed through the fifth inning as the teams remained deadlocked. Turner hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the fifth and took third on an Ellis ground out.
Arruebarrena drew a walk to put runners on the corners with one out. In a bold move, manager Don Mattingly called for a squeeze play, but Haren whiffed on his bunt attempt and Turner was tagged out at the plate, however Arruebarrena managed to move into scoring .
Haren then made up for his blunder by hitting a single to center to collect his fifth RBI on the season that gave the Dodgers a 2-1 lead. Haren retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh innings, then was pinch-hit for by Darwin Barney in the bottom of the seventh.
After Barney was called out on strikes for the second out, Gordon hit a stand up triple to extend the inning. Yasiel Puig drew a walk and Wilmer Flores committed his second error of the game on an Adrian Gonzalez grounder, which allowed Gordon to score.
Carlos Torres relieved Niese and promptly gave up a two-run double to Kemp and the Dodgers led 5-1 at the end of the seventh. Brandon League record two outs, but also allowed a single before turning the ball over to J.P. Howell.
Howell walked the first batter he faced and both runners advanced on a passed ball. The lefty kept prevented the Mets from cutting into their deficit by getting Granderson looking to end the inning.
Ellis added to the Dodgers lead with an RBI double in the eighth off Rafael Montero. With a 6-1 lead, Jamey Wright was called on in the ninth and he allowed consecutive singles that put runners on the corners with none out.
Murphy scored on Lucas Duda’s sacrifice fly and the Dodgers lead was cut to 6-2. Wright then got a game-ending double play to begin the series with a win for the Dodgers.
