Dodgers Vs. Padres Recap: Ryu Strikes Out 10, Puig Drives In Lone Run

[new_royalslider id=”224″] Roughly 15 hours after the Los Angeles Dodgers won a pitcher’s duel against the San Diego Padres in bottom of the ninth, the two teams locked up for another game where offense was nonexistent.

Hyun-Jin Ryu was on the mound for his first start since allowing seven runs to the Detroit Tigers in 2.1 innings. Sunday was an entirely different story as Ryu was in full command of his pitches and retired the first 11 batters he faced.

The Dodgers threatened in the second inning with a leadoff double from Andre Ethier, followed by a Juan Uribe single. However the Padres lone All-Star, Tyson Ross, then struck out A.J. Ellis and benefited from a Miguel Rojas line drive that was caught by Chase Headley, who then stepped on third to double off Ethier.

Of the 11 hitters retired, Ryu struck out seven. Carlos Quentin ended the left-hander’s streak with a two-out single in the fourth, but the Padres wouldn’t make anything of it as Yasmani Grandal hit into a fielder’s choice.

With the game still scoreless, Alexi Amarista hit a leadoff single in the sixth. Ellis made a nice read on a Ross bunt and threw to second for the first out. Ryu collected his 10th strikeout of the game and got Headley to fly out to end the inning.

Dee Gordon singled to center in the bottom of the sixth and stole second base on a pitch out. Carl Crawford followed with walk to put two runners on with one out for Yasiel Puig, who was 0-for-2 with two strikeouts to that point.

Puig broke the scoreless tie with an RBI single up the middle and the Dodgers led 1-0 as Brandon League entered the game in the seventh. League quickly fell behind in the count 2-0 to Quentin, who hit the pitcher’s third offering to deep right where Puig made the catch on the run.

After issuing a walk, League induced a fielder’s choice that was nearly an inning-ending double play, but League couldn’t locate first base after taking the throw from Rojas. Cameron Maybin hit a two-out single to right and it was the last batter League faced.

J.P. Howell replaced League and Scott Van Slyke took over in center as part of a double switch. Brooks Conrad lined out to left and the Dodgers continued to lead, 1-0. After another scoreless inning from Howell, Puig doubled in the bottom of the eighth with one out.

The Dodgers wouldn’t capitalize however as Gonzalez flied out to left and Matt Kemp, who pinch-hit for Howell, struck out looking. Kenley Jansen took the mound in the ninth and walked Quentin with one out.

Jace Peterson pinch-ran for Quentin and went first to third on Grandal’s single to right field. Jansen struck out Jake Goebbert and also struck out pinch-hitter Seth Smith to secure the 1-0 win that kept the Dodgers on top of the National League standings heading into the All-Star break.
