Dodgers vs Rockies Pre-Game: Dodgers Try to Sweep for Mom

Dee Gordon

The Dodgers will be looking to sweep the Colorado Rockies and give mothers at Dodger Stadium a great Mother’s Day gift before the barbecues come out and dinner is served.

Ted Lilly (4-0) will be on the mound, trying to make good on the Mother’s day festivities as the Rockies’ rookie Alex White (0-1) will try to rain on the party. With a win, the Dodgers would maintain the league’s best record and improve it’s league-best home record as well.

Keys to Dodger Victory:

Pitching: You’d never know that Ted Lilly started the season on the disabled list as he’s been on fire, posting four wins with a 1.41 ERA to start the season. Lilly pitched six strong innings of one-run ball against the San Francisco Giants in his last start and hasn’t allowed more than two runs in his first five starts. If Lilly can stay in whatever comfort zone he’s been in this season, he can shut down this Rockies offense like he did two weeks ago in Colorado. However, if he suddenly loses control of his pitches, this Colorado lineup can be unforgiving with boppers like Carlos Gonzalez, Troy Tulowitzki and Todd Helton looking to take advantage of mistake pitches.

Hitting: The Rockies’ Alex White has one game under his belt where he pitched fairly well in a loss to the San Diego Padres, going 6.1 innings, striking out five and allowing only two earned runs. There isn’t a great sample size of his ability, but the Dodgers’ experience at the plate should be what dictates the pace of the game, not White. You hope that Matt Kemp can take this opportunity to get out of his slump and make the rookie pay, but if not, the other seven position players need to step up at the plate, as they have been the last couple of games.
