Dodgers Vs. Rockies Recap: Kershaw Throws Eight Shutout Innings

[new_royalslider id=”213″] Jair Jurrjens was on the mound for his first MLB start since May of 2013. Dee Gordon welcomed the right-hander back to the Majors with a bunt single and the Los Angeles Dodgers took an early lead on Yasiel Puig’s two-run home run to straight away center.

Jurrjens’ troubles continued as Hanley Ramirez followed with a double to left field. Jurrjens recorded the first out by getting Adrian Gonzalez to pop out. He nearly got out of inning but allowed an RBI triple to Andre Ethier that put the Dodgers ahead 3-0 and gave them a cycle as a team.

Clayton Kershaw picked up where he left off, striking out two of the first three batters and four of the first seven he faced. DJ LeMahieu put an end to any thoughts of another no-hitter for Kershaw with a one-out single in the third inning.

Jurrjens laid down a sac-bunt and wound up reaching on an error as Kershaw lobbed the throw to first base and Gordon was unable to come up with it. LeMahieu took third on the play to give the Rockies runners on the corners with one out.

The opportunity fell apart as Kershaw picked off Jurrjens and ended the inning with his fifth strikeout of the game. Ethier hit a leadoff single in the fourth but was erased on a double play. A.J. Ellis hit a two-out single however it didn’t amount to anything and the Dodgers continued to hold a 3-0 lead.

Kershaw opened the bottom of the fourth with another strikeout and received some help from Juan Uribe, who made a nice stop and throw from foul territory along the third base line. Gordon reached on an infield single in the fifth and the Dodgers received a bit of a scare when Ramirez was hit by a pitch on his left hand.

Manager Don Mattingly and trainer Stan Conte checked on the shortstop, who remained in the game for the time being. Scott Van Slyke extended the Dodgers’ lead with a three-run home run, and Ellis and Kershaw added to it with each hitting an RBI single.

Chad Bettis took over for Jurrjens and Gordon reached on his second infield single of the game that loaded the bases. Bettis ended the inning by getting Puig to ground out. Erisbel Arruebarrena replaced Ramirez in the bottom half of the inning, which was another breeze for Kershaw.

Nolan Arenado’s leadoff single in the seventh inning was just the Rockies’ second hit of the game. Kershaw rebounded to retire the next three batters and extended his scoreless innings streak to 35. Kershaw then retired the side in order in the eighth, which was his final inning of work.

Rex Broters walked two in the ninth and Arruebarrena cashed in with a two-out RBI single to center that extended the Dodgers’ lead to 9-0. With the Dodgers holding a comfortable lead, Jamey Wright came out of the bullpen to record the final three outs of the game.

The Dodgers finished with 19 hits, which was their highest total since 2011 and they moved 1.5 games ahead of the San Francisco Giants in the National League West standings.
