Friedman: ‘Safe To Assume’ Dodgers Will Add Two Starters

[new_royalslider id=”342″] While the Los Angeles Dodgers were busy wheeling and dealing at the Winter Meetings on Wednesday into Thursday, the roster overhaul will continue to occur.

The Dodgers traded away Dee Gordon, Dan Haren, Miguel Rojas and Matt Kemp in separate deals that netted them new talent. More could be announced soon as a potential trade for shortstop Jimmy Rollins was reported as well as a possible deal with free agent starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy. Andrew Friedman and Farhan Zaidi have been hard at work to try and improve the NL West champions and they are certainly not done.

During a press conference late Wednesday night, Friedman mentioned what the Dodgers next move could be:

I mean I think it’s certainly possible that we will add two starting pitchers and whether it’s through the trade front or the free agent market I’m not sure yet, but I think it’s safe to assume that we’re going to try to add two starters.”

The McCarthy deal will likely be one of those two spots, as a four-year, $48 million deal has been rumored. The right-hander spent 2014 with the Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Yankees, having much more success in New York. Still on the free agent market are right-handers Max Scherzer and James Shields among others. Scherzer is said to be asking for a similar deal to what Clayton Kershaw received last offseason and may put him out of reach for the Dodgers.

On the trade front, Cole Hamels has been the biggest name linked to the Dodgers. Hamels would require the team to trade away at least one of their top prospects and take on the remaining $94 million over the next four years.

With Kershaw, Zack Greinke and Hyun-Jin Ryu, the Dodgers have a formidable trio that will soon be joined by new faces.

  1. I am a big Matt Kemp guy, but lets face it- we haven’t accomplished the mission at this point, so changing what we are doing can’t be considered a dumb move at this point

    1. We were a couple of relief pitchers away from a WS and Kemp was a driving offensive force for us. Let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater. We don’t want to become the Oakland A’s.

  2. Lets think about the possible rotation for a sec, considering that Cole and Brandon end up playing for the Dodgers.. Kershaw(L) Greinke(R) Ryu(L) McCarthy(R) Hamels(L) Obviously its open for debate as to where Cole will be within the 3-5th spots and how to mix up what would be a terrific rotation. Another note is that if my memory serves me correctly Cole is a San Diegan which is a hell of a lot closer to LA then Philly, I think the Dodgers would be making a “lets get to the series” kind of STATEMENT if these two additions are to be made. Exciting christmas for us Doyer fans 🙂
