Grading The 2013 Trade Deadline: How Did The Dodgers Fare?

The 2013 July 31 trade deadline came and went without a major move from the Dodgers, only the consolation of a minor league trade for a third catcher, Drew Butera.

However, the Dodgers did most of their wheeling and dealing in early July as they traded for Marlins starter Ricky Nolasco and Cubs reliever Carlos Marmol.

General manager Ned Colletti said the team wanted to acquire a reliever and they did so in signing former Giants closer Brian Wilson for the remainder of the season.

While there was speculation early yesterday morning that the Dodgers could be positioning themselves for a blockbuster deal since prized outfield prospect Joc Pederson was a weird scratch, the Dodgers stood pat.

Unlike past last year’s trade deadline that saw them get Hanley Ramirez, the Dodgers laid low and going 19-6 in July and 27-7 since late June warrants keeping things together.

Bringing in too many outside pieces to a new locker room could ruin chemistry as the Dodgers have a 2.5 game lead in the NL West entering play today.

As they showed last year, just because the July 31 deadline passed, the Dodgers could definitely do things in August. Players just need to pass through waivers before teams make deals, but Colletti and Stan Kasten have done it before.

Names like Cliff Lee or even Michael Young could be tied to the Dodgers or if the Marmol and Wilson experiments aren’t working out, a trade for a reliever could happen.

In grading all their shopping, I’d give the Dodgers a B/B+ depending on how Wilson turns out. Marmol has looked shaky in his outings with the Dodgers while Nolasco has been great in stabilizing the back end of the rotation.

Since he’s joined the Dodgers, Nolasco is 1-1 with a 3.13 ERA while the wild card of the bunch is Wilson, who has shown in the past a propensity to be effective in late-inning situations.

The 2013 version of the Dodgers are riding an incredible wave of momentum from Yasiel Puig, Hanley Ramirez and Clayton Kershaw while there could be more additions by the end of the month.
