In Kershaw We Trust

Hey, Dodger fans! Can we please step off the ledge and hold onto hope? Because it’s not over yet, not even close. Believe me, I understand, the last two games have been downright horrible… soul crushing even. Yes, the Cubs took it to the Dodgers, but even more painful – the Dodgers took it to themselves by playing sloppy baseball.

It’s frustrating, believe me, I get it. I was swearing like a sailor during the last two games.

But, here’s the thing, I didn’t take on the mantle of #DodgerOptimist for nothing. Even in the face of crushing defeats, not to mention the brink of elimination, I’m going to wake up the next morning and find a glimmer of hope… and we have more than a glimmer here, guys.

Can you think of any player in baseball you’d rather hang your hopes on then Clayton Kershaw? I can’t. I stand by Dave Roberts using Kenta Maeda in game 5 despite the outcome. Because we’ve got two ready and rested pitchers in Clayton Kershaw and Rich Hill. These two pitchers, along with Kenley Jansen shut down the Cubs bats in two shutout games, there’s no reason to think they can’t do it again. I like our chances.

We’re playing in the Cubbies house and there’s no denying the cards are stacked against us. The fans will be loud and hungry to make history and break ‘The Curse’. But, this may also play into the Dodgers hands. These Cubs have a lot of baggage on their shoulders right now – 108 years worth of baggage. They’ve got goat curses, Bartman and black cats. Hopefully that pressure gets into their heads a bit.

Hopefully our bats heat back up and hopefully like he’s done so many times, Kershaw puts the weight of this franchise on his strong shoulders and does what he does best – WIN. We just need to win and get this thing to a game 7. The Dodgers acquired Rich Hill for just this reason. He pitched a gem in his last outing.

Yes, the Dodgers are the underdogs – everyone is rooting for the poor, cursed Cubbies. The sports media isn’t even trying to hide their biased views. They’re clamoring for their Cubs storybook ending just as hard as the Cubs fans. But, I guess I’m rooting for the ‘villain’ in this fairytale. I always thought the wolf was cooler than Little Red Riding Hood anyway.

Finally, if we’ve learned anything about postseason baseball it’s anything can happen. There’s no reason the Dodgers – this improbable team – can’t write their own magical ending to this story. So, let’s just take today and R-E-L-A-X and get ready for Saturday and game 6 — because we’ve got the best pitcher on the planet ready to put the skids on the Cubs celebration. I feel pretty good about that and you should too.
