Kendrick on Dodgers: ‘I was hoping that I would return to L.A.’

The sentiments were well-known on basically all sides throughout this offseason.

Howie Kendrick wanted to return to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers, however, wanted the compensatory pick tied to his signing elsewhere. Fans wanted the Dodgers to spend money.

Kendrick has spent his entire career in Southern California, so it would make sense he’d want to remain where he’s probably most comfortable. The Dodgers, despite wanting that pick, needed a second baseman. And, again, fans enjoy spending other people’s money.

The situation played out about as well as anyone (maybe aside from Kendrick, who winds up with a much cheaper and shorter contract than he would’ve hoped for) would like.

Despite not getting paid as he might have expected given the consistent level of play throughout his career, Kendrick does sound rather happy to remain a Dodger.

This, via ESPN’s Doug Padilla:

“You know, at the end of the season I was hoping that I would return to L.A.,” Kendrick said via conference call Friday. “I think one of the biggest things was they knew I was probably not going to accept the qualifying offer. I was really optimistic about the market.

I’m very happy to be back in L.A., though, because I really enjoyed my time here last year and had a lot of fun with the guys. We came up short, but I definitely enjoyed playing in the atmosphere, the team, the front office, everybody was great.”

It’s great to hear how happy he is to still be a Dodger. Contract issues can get to be extremely frustrating and it’s vital that he’s able to put that behind him as he prepares for the 2016 campaign.

Again, welcome back, Howie! We’re sure looking forward to watching you flourish this upcoming season with the Dodgers.
