Lilly Leads Dodgers in Battle of Lefties

Ted Lilly

BACK ON TRACK?
Over the course of the past month, the Dodger pitching staff has “gotten it”. Sure, they came around a little too late, but it is nice to know that the talent is still there and not lost; especially when you consider that today’s starter, Ted Lilly, was given $33 million for a 3-year contract.

Lilly sits near the top of the Dodger pitching staff over the last month. Sure he went 2-3, but did so with a 2.55 ERA, which helped lower his season ERA to 4.37.

Prior to that, Lilly was 7-10 with an atrocious ERA of 5.07.

This season, he has struggled mightily against the Giants. He is 0-1 with a 7.06 ERA.

Newest Giant, Carlos Beltran is batting 3-for-11 (.273) against Lilly. However, two of those three hits were home runs.

YOUNG GIANT COMING INTO HIS OWN
When talking about the core of the Giants pitching staff, names such as Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain are tossed around. Soon enough, the name Madison Bumgarner may join that conversation.

Bumgarner has only gotten better as the season goes on. Since the beginning of August, Bumgarner is 4-2 with a 2.29 ERA with 55 strikeouts against just 12 walks in 51 1/3 innings pitched.

His last two starts have seen him pitch at least eight innings and striking out at least 11 in both outings.

The Dodgers are acquainted with Bumgarner this season; he is 2-1 against the Dodgers with a 3.82 ERA. However, subtract his first outing on April 11 at home and Bumgarner is 2-0 with a superb 2.22 ERA.

His last home start against the Dodgers was better as he pitched eight innings and allowed three runs on four hits, while striking out seven batters and not walking any.

Bumgarner has allowed just one home run to Dodger batters (Rod Barajas).

19-for-76 (.250), 3 2B, 1 HR, 6 RBIs, 6 BB, 11 K, .313 OBP, .329 SLG, .642 OPS
