Minor League News: Urias Shines and Van Slyke to Begin Rehab Assignment

The Los Angeles Dodgers hope to have key players back soon. They are one step closer as pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu began his rehab assignment along with Frankie Montas. Outfielder Scott Van Slyke (lower back) is also on his way back and is expected to begin his rehab assignment on Sunday.

The Dodgers hope to have players like Van Slyke, Ryu, Montas and Brandon McCarthy back soon. The injury bug has severely plagued the team this season, but manager Dave Roberts is confident the team will find their rhythm.

“Baseball always seems to work itself out, but these [players returning] are good things when looking at the depth,” Roberts tells the Petros and Money Show.

One bright star in the minor leagues is pitcher Julio Urias. The 19-year-old left-hander made an impression Friday night pitching for Triple-A Oklahoma City. Urias threw five scoreless innings and extended his scoreless streak to 27 straight innings.

From Eric Stephen, TrueBlueLA.com:

Urias allowed three hits and walked none in his five innings, striking out five. He lowered his ERA on the season to a paltry 1.10, with 44 strikeouts and eight walks in 41 innings.

The Dodgers‘ top prospect left the game with a 1-0 lead, and retired his final five batters faced … Urias has allowed zero or run in six of his seven starts this season, with another three-inning relief appearance mixed in.

Urias performance has not gone unnoticed and with Montas beginning his rehab assignment Roberts is excited for the opportunity for them to come up to the majors.

“I do know those two young kids can really impact us at this level, and when they arrive there is going to be a lot of excitement … Julio has done nothing but perform, so I don’t know when [they will be called up], but when they come it’s going to be exciting for everyone,” said Roberts.
