MLB News: Phillies Sign Cuban Starter Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez

The Philadelphia Phillies made a surprise move late tonight as they reached agreement with Cuban right-handed starter Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez on a six-year contract.

Seemingly the favorite for every prospect, the Dodgers were thought to be the probable landing spot, but reportedly pulled out of negotiations early this week.

Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports first reported the deal was completed:

It was also reported earlier this week that the Dodgers signed Cuban infielder Alexander Guerrero, but no official announcement has been made due to immigration issues.

It’s interesting to find out the Phillies signed Gonzalez on the same day they scratched ace left handed starter Cliff Lee from his start tomorrow. General manager Ruben Amaro has been hesitant to start selling off pieces, but admitted today that the team would start to listen on Lee.

The Dodgers didn’t get the Cuban pitcher most thought they would, but it sounds like they’ve zeroed in on another Cuban prospect they like more.
