The pool of expected available pitchers was cut by one on Thursday when the Oakland Athletics traded left-hander Scott Kazmir to the Houston Astros. While Kazmir being dealt essentially unlocked the door on the trade market, there’s been little action to speak of since.

That appears to have changed Sunday morning as according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports the Cincinnati Reds have traded Johnny Cueto to the Kansas City Royals:

The two teams reportedly were on the verge of a deal Saturday prior to Cueto’s start against the Colorado Rockies. It fell apart last minute and the right-hander proceeded to throw eight shutout innings at Coors Field, following in the footsteps of Cole Hamels by making his potentially last outing with his current team a dominant one.

Cueto on the season is 7-6 with a 2.62 ERA, 3.12 FIP and 0.93 WHIP. He was forced to skip a start with a minor elbow issue, but hasn’t had any issues since. It was previously reported Cueto was among the Dodgers’ top targets, though recent indications are their focus has shifted to David Price, whom the Detroit Tigers have yet to decide if they’ll place on the trading block.

With Cueto and Kazmir off the market, options still available to the Dodgers are Yovani Gallardo and Hamels, among others. Kazmir, not considered to be among the elite group of pitchers, was acquired for a package of middle-of-the-road prospects. The complete details and all players involved in the Cueto trade is unclear at this time.
