Joe Maddon

While the Los Angeles Dodgers made strides to bolster their front office with the hiring of Andrew Friedman as president of baseball operations, some believed the manager’s position was also in need of being addressed.

Friedman’s ties to the Tampa Bay Rays and Joe Maddon led to speculation that he too would join the Dodgers. However, Friedman announced in his introductory press conference Don Mattingly would return in 2015 and again voiced his support when Maddon opted out of the final year of his contract with the Rays.

Maddon suddenly became one of the hottest free agents in the game and his agent reportedly fielded calls from teams gauging Maddon’s interest in a variety of roles. One of the teams that remained quiet after Maddon made his decision to leave the Rays was the Chicago Cubs.

They were quite for good reason as it appears Maddon become the Cubs manager, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports:

While Heyman reports a deal is complete, Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune casts some doubt on the situation:

Patrick Mooney of CSNChicago.com also reports as the deal as not yet complete, but indicates one is forthcoming:

Assuming Maddon joins the Cubs, he will replace Rick Renteria, who had two years remaining on his contract and it’s a reunion of sorts for Cubs president Theo Epstein and his soon-to-be new manager. Epstein interviewed Maddon for the Boston Red Sox’s managerial position before deciding to go with Terry Francona.

Maddon spent nine seasons as manager of the Rays and finished with a 754-705 record. Along with Friedman, he excelled with making the most out of what the Rays had at their disposal. Maddon guided the team to two American League East division titles and one trip to World Series.

Given that Game 7 of the World Series is being played Wednesday, a formal announcement can be expected in the coming days.
