NL West Round-Up: Dodgers Struggle, Injuries Still Dominate Headlines

[new_royalslider id=”46″]

After another week of the season is in the books and the Los Angeles Dodgers were still unable to find their stride, coming undone in the bullpen and continuously falling victim to errors. Despite the poor week, they remain near the top of the NL West standings.

Here’s a look at the news from around the division:

Arizona Diamondbacks

As if dealing with a struggling pitching staff wasn’t enough, the Arizona Diamondbacks are now set to be without Mark Trumbo for six to eight weeks. The left fielder was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a stress fracture in his left foot. The news comes days after manager Kirk Gibson addressed the speculation surrounding his job status. Despite a $110 million payroll, the Diamondbacks are 8-20 and last place in the NL West.

General manager Kevin Towers is also facing scrutiny over the Diamondbacks struggles and deferred questions on his job security to managing general partner Ken Kendrick and team president/CEO Derrick Hall.

Colorado Rockies

Carlos Gonzalez is marred in a slump and the Colorado Rockies are without Michael Cuddyer, but they still managed to put together a successful week by taking two of three against the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers. Cuddyer traveled with the Rockies to Los Angeles despite reporting no improvement in his hamstring.

Jhoulys Chacin made a rehab start on Friday and threw 80 pitches in 4.2 innings of work. Rockies athletic trainer Keith Dugger had posititve remarks for Chacin’s outing, though manager Walt Weiss isn’t sure when the right-hander will return to the team.

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers had a rough seven-game homestand, going just 2-5 in losing both series against the Philadelphia Phillies and Rockies. Perhaps in bigger news, Clayton Kershaw made a rehab start on Friday and looked sharp. Kershaw had hoped it would be enough to get him reinstated from the DL, but manager Don Mattingly announced on Sunday the reigning Cy Young Award winner is set to make another rehab start.

Brian Wilson continued to struggle, with his best outing of the week coming on Sunday during a low leverage situation. Mattingly maintains his reliever is healthy and he has yet to hesitate in calling on the right-hander.

San Diego Padres

As part of a double switch in the 11th inning of a game against the Washington Nationals, San Diego Padres ace Andrew Cashner played left field for one out. Casher didn’t record an out or an assist and the Padres won the game in the 12th.

Cameron Maybin was reinstated from the DL in time for Sunday’s finale against the Nationals. Maybin went 2-for-4 with a double in the Padres 4-2 win. As for Carlos Quentin, manager Bud Black said the outfielder will take batting practice and go through other activities as he still looks to return from a bone bruise in his left knee.

San Francisco Giants

The Giants completed the weekend sweep on a Brandon Hicks home run and finished Sunday two games ahead of the Rockies and Dodgers in the NL West standings. On the injury front, the Giants have two players who may be heading in different directions. An MRI on Angel Pagan’s right knee revealed a small tear of his patella tendon. Pagan was out of the Giants lineup on Wednesday and manager Bruce Bochy said the situation is something the team will continue to monitor.

Meanwhile, reliever Jeremy Affeldt appears to be fully recovered from a sprained knee that had him on the DL at the beginning of the season. The lefty has thrown 6.1 innings, giving up just two hits and no runs.
