POLL: Should The Dodgers Replace Juan Uribe With Alex Guerrero?

Alex Guerrero, Juan Uribe

The Los Angeles Dodgers entered the 2015 season with incredible depth not only throughout their active roster, but also in their farm system. However, with that depth came some difficult decisions when needing to set the roster for Opening Day.

The Dodgers have since shuffled a handful of players back and forth from the Minors as they’ve needed to fill an occasional spot start or hole here and there. Perhaps the person most affected by the talent-ladened roster is Alex Guerrero.

Guerrero used Spring Training to prove he’s capable of playing third base and left field, and reminded everyone of the big bat he carries. The Dodgers of course have a plethora of outfielders and Juan Uribe as the incumbent starter at third.

At age 36, Uribe slogged his way through the spring and got off to a slow start in the regular season. His defense has remained the same — elite and reliable — but he’s batting just .250/.289/.278 with only one extra-base hit (double) and zero RBIs.

Uribe’s batting average didn’t creep above .200 until April 17, which was the second of what’s now a modest six-game hitting streak; Uribe has just one hit in each of the games with his lone multi-hit game coming back on April 10.

Meanwhile Guerrero has four home runs and 12 RBIs in 20 plate appearances over nine games — batting .474/.450/.1.211. Guerrero’s started three games and impressed in his first career start on April 11 — going 3-for-5 with a home run, double and four RBIs in a win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly has argued against naming Guerrero the new starting third baseman simply because of his hot streak, but is that the correct decision?
