The Los Angeles Dodgers looked to build on their division lead and complete a three-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs in a Sunday night game featured on ESPN. Alex Wood got the start for the National League West leaders while the Cubs countered with Jake Arrieta.

Wood struck out Dexter Fowler to start the game, then ran into some trouble. After Chris Denorifa walked, Kris Bryant hit a line-drive two-run home run to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead. Wood went on to allow two more hits in the inning but was able to get out of the jam without any more harm.

Facing an early deficit, the Dodgers went down in order in the bottom of the first. Fowler reached on a two-out infield single by beating out Kiké Hernandez’s throw. Denorfia kept the inning alive with a base hit to left, which brought Bryant to the plate.

The Cubs rookie third baseman was unable to duplicate his first-inning success and struck out swinging, though it came at a cost for Wood as he was up to 53 pitches through only two innings. Arrieta sailed through the bottom of the second, keeping the Dodgers off the bases and striking out Yasmani Grandal to end the inning.

Starlin Castro improved to 2-for-2 on the night with a one-out base hit to center in the third. Miguel Montero dropped a flare single into shallow left field, but Wood again got out of trouble on a strikeout.

Joc Pederson struck out to start the bottom of the third for the Dodgers. Hernandez hit a sharp line drive to second base that Castro was unable to handle and charged for an error. Wood successfully moved Hernandez over to second base with a sacrifice bunt, however Jimmy Rollins struck out swinging and the Cubs still led 2-0 through three innings.

  1. This team makes me sick to my stomach! Two no-hitters, three straight shutouts by Giants, swept by the Brewers! So embarrassing to the Dodger winning tradition. Please, please DO NOT make the playoffs! Cannot win at home or the road, no bullpen. Keyshawn and Greinke do not deserve this pathetic team. 27 years of torture since ’88–next year 28! It is a miracle Vince Scully is still alive to witness this! Just plain ugly!!
