Rumor Updates: More for the Dodgers Front Office to Work On

Momentum needs to be started with a push and depending on that push, the laws of nature will determine how quickly that momentum reaches it’s full potential. Well, the Dodgers started off with a strong push with the signing of Rich Hill and Dodger fans are hoping that the momentum carries into a few more big moves.

Obviously, the most important signings are going to be Justin Turner and Kenley Jansen. Rumors are that the Yankees have already reached out to Jansen AND Aroldis Chapman with offers that may blow the deal Melancon received from the Giants out of the water (4 years / $62M).

According to multiple sources like Ken Rosenthal, Buster Olney and Andrew McCullough, the Dodgers have been very active in exploring trades and signing free agents. Let’s try to sum it up here, so you can catch up on it all:

With the White Sox trading Chris Sale to the Red Sox, the White Sox are most likely going to continue their rebuild and will look to unload Todd Frazier as well. The multi-million dollar question is going to be if the Dodgers give up on Justin Turner in favor acquiring Frazier, will they push hard to re-sign Kenley Jansen?

  1. Signing JT should BE THE FIRST PRIORITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  He would cost Dodgers money but not top prospects and they have the $$ to do so.  Why would they want to trade for 1 year only of Frazier, giving up good prospects for a guy who will be a FA after 2017!

  2. Jansen also needs to be re-signed.  Again it would cost Dodgers money to which they have and not top prospects.

  3. NOT saying they should but they’d do it because they’d have to give lesser prospects for a one year rental of Frazier, they don’t trust JT’s knees, they have someone on the farm for 3B OR will move Seager there and put someone else at SS. Lots of reasons. Don’t let your love of JT (I have it too) cloud your understanding of what they need to do for the good of the overall team.

First thing is, there are no other internal options to replace Turner.  ,Segedin and or Kike are not the answer for that starting job. Back up/utility guys?  yes.  But even though they may give up less for that 1 year of Frazier, it still means that 3B will have to be addressed again in 2018.  I have no problem getting Frazier, as he is familiar with the NL pitching but for most of us, Turner is the priority even with those questionable knees.  Seager won’t be moving to 3rd anytime soon either.

  5. DanEstrada You’ve surely have to be kidding, or maybe you don’t follow the games.  Seager and Turner are the only consistent offensive players in the Dodgers’ lineup.  Exactly where are the Dodgers going to replace Turner’s production:  Segedin?  Hernandez?  Culberson?  Let’s at least be serious here.

  6. We Dodgers’ fans are focused on holes to fill at third, second and closer; however, the biggest hole the Dodgers have to fill is in the front office.  Friedman and Zaidi are both clowns.  They throw out all these trade scenarios and free agent targets when neither of them have the creativity to get anything done.  I don’t want to see these clowns trading any top prospects because they lack the know how to make good moves.  Just look at the acquisitions of Kazmir, McCarthy and Anderson, not to mention about 30 other players who aren’t even with the team anymore.

  7. Giants sign Melancon thereby addressing their biggest weakness from 2016.  Cubbies get their closer for a RF they will not miss.  The Nats move 3 of their top 6 prospects to get Adam Eaton, leaving them with boatloads of cash to get a closer.  Giving up the prospects tells me they are going for it in 2017.  With Eaton in CF, Trea Turner goes to SS.  The lineup is hugely improved with Eaton over Espinosa.  You know both Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman will improve from their 2016 seasons (as should Gio Gonzalez).  Boston went all in with Sale, Thornburg, and Moreland.  Blue Jays took the proactive approach and signed Kendrys Morales and Pearce to replace Bautista and EE.  DBacks & Mariners improve (Walker vs. Segura).  Mariners now on the verge of getting Giants Chris Heston, and looking to move Seth Smith to get $$$ available for 1B (No I would not want Heston or Smith, but the teams are making moves to improve themselves).  Rays stepped up to sign their catcher (their one big weakness).  Rox sign Desmond opening all kinds of possibilities for Blackmon are Cargo.  Mets re-sign Cespedes, and expect their pitching of Harvey, De Grom, Matz, and Wheeler all to heal and be ready to be the best staff in the NL.  Even the Fish and Braves made moves to help themselves.  I truly believe that the Cards will get their CF (maybe Blackmon).  Nobody trusts Preller so I would not expect much from the Pads.  Dodger big news…Puig needs to lose weight.  Gee, I bet teams that may have been interested are just waiting on hold to ask about his availability.  I truly hope that I am pleasantly surprised to find out that LAD make their moves to address 3B, 2B, closer, and RH power OF bat.  Because right now arguably, Cubs, Nats, Cards, Bucs, Mets, Giants are all better (yes on paper) than our beloved Dodgers.

  8. I have been a life long Dodger fan and always will be. I have never been as frusturated in our team as I am right now. I lay it all at the feet of Fraudman. We are masters of creating interest and whispers, but sit by and watch others get better as we just sit on our hands making no bold moves. All while running up a tab that limits what we can do now but signing and overpaying duds with arm troubles. It is an embarassment on some of the deals made in the past 3-4 seasons all while contract friendly superstars go elsewhere for similar or even less deals than we could have pulled off. Last year it can be argued that the small deals we made at the deadline were good but honestly it cost us a World Series shot. As good as Rich Hill was in the limited number of innings he pitched, we would have most likely locked up Sale and got by the Cubs. And Reddick? I dont need to say anything but thankgoodness we let someone else pick up that huge payday. During these winter meetings, if we dont pick up Dozier or Frazier it will be a complete failure. Turner is gutsy but Id rather him sign on with someone else for Cabrera like money. He has only had one full season on display and with his age, not worth a long term deal and pushing us to that cap. I dont blame him from wanting to cash in while he can during a weak market. Ill take Frazier over him anyday at less money too. Please dont let us go out and get more Bud Norris type pitchers to try to help Clayton out now! Another brilliant move by Fraudman. By the way, what did he exactly ever win in Tampa before we got such a genious???

All valid points and Spot on!  I have never been as frustrated as well as I am right now.  We all must lower our expectations because with this FO in place none of us will see another NL pennant in our lifetimes, sad but it is what it is.

  10. I can now say It we now have the Los Angeles A’s/Ray’s a team that will keep young prospects until they have enough service to get payed then let them go as free agents. Then sign mediocre pitchers just to be competitive but never win anything. Just like Freedman’s Ray’s & Faidi’s A’s

It’s been this way for a while.   At this point, this team is not even competitive.  Dodgers for now anyway have struck out again at these Winter meetings.
