Rumors: Dodgers Have Contacted DBacks About Miguel Montero

Miguel Montero
A rough season for A.J. Ellis and the Los Angeles Dodger catchers left them with room for improvement this offseason.

The team was linked to free agent catcher Russell Martin, and had a meeting scheduled with their former player, but he signed a long-term deal with the Toronto Blue Jays. With little left on the open market, the Dodgers will need to turn to trades if they plan to upgrade at catcher. Ellis should return next season, especially since Clayton Kershaw publicly requested his return; however, it could be in a backup capacity should the team make a deal.

According to Nick Piecoro of AZ Central, there is one name that the Dodgers could be targeting in a trade:

The Diamondbacks continue to have dialogue with other clubs on a variety of players, including catcher Miguel Montero. However, according to a source, talks regarding Montero have not picked up significantly in the days following the Toronto Blue Jays’ signing of catcher Russell Martin. Among the teams the Diamondbacks have spoken to about Montero are the Chicago Cubs, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago White Sox.

Montero hit .243 with 13 home runs and 72 RBIs in 136 games for the Diamondbacks last season. He is a two-time All-Star and is considered one of the better catchers at framing pitches. The 31-year-old would bring some power to the position, as he averages 17 home runs per 162 games in his career. Though he has struggled a bit since 2013, he would provide an offensive upgrade over Ellis.

The Dodgers and Diamondbacks aren’t the two names you expect to be talking trades because of their rivalry in the NL West, but the Diamondbacks are looking to rid themselves of Montero’s contract under new general manager Dave Stewart.

More details may emerge in the coming weeks and it’s possible that we see Montero in Los Angeles next season.

  1. That’s because he was a member of the Diamondbacks. If he is with the Dodgers he is not going to worry about that stuff.
