With September upon us, the Los Angeles Dodgers are making a conscious effort to evaluate their roster and prepare the team for the 40-man roster expansion. With a few key players on the roster currently on the disabled list, the front office needs to evaluate each situation to determine which moves are in the best interest of the team.

In recent weeks, the Dodgers saw starting second baseman Howie Kendrick go to the DL with a hamstring injury. With such a sensitive injury, the staff is taking their time with Kendrick to assure that he is completely healed before allowing him to return. Taking the majority of starts during his absence has been Kiké Hernandez, the exciting utility player, but since Hernandez has been occupied at second base, the Dodgers have had to rethink their options regarding the outfield positions.

On Monday, the Dodgers have interest in Boston Red Sox outfielder Alejandro De Aza, a 31-year-old player from the Dominican Republic. According to Ken Rosenthal’s Twitter, the team has now reached out to the Red Sox about a possible deal:

Rosenthal went to on to speculate about why a possible deal would be made:

The Dodgers were reportedly interested in Chase Utley, the coveted veteran for the Philadelphia Phillies, but talks have dwindled down as time has gone on. De Aza is capable of playing all three outfield positions, thus allowing Hernandez to stay in the infield to take reps at second base and at shortstop.

In his past three games, De Aza went 4-for-9, with two doubles, a home run, four runs scored, and three RBIs. On the season, the left-handed hitter’s slash line .273/.327/.455, with seven home runs and 32 RBIs.

  1. Ethier, Puig, Crawford, Pederson, Van Slyke, we’ve got plenty of outfielders, I guess they are looking for a guy who can play center, since all our guys are more suited to corners, other than Pederson, with Kike in the infield for a while.

    1. I appreciate your insight as I wondered why they wanted to add yet another outfielder, thank you!
