Scott Van Slyke ‘Excited’ To Watch Corey Seager In Spring Training

Corey Seager

With Hanley Ramirez agreeing to a contract with the Boston Red Sox, the shortstop position is a glaring weakness for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Of course some would argue it was a weakness with Ramirez manning the position, the Dodgers face a different challenge now as they lack a clearcut replacement.

Dee Gordon tweeted on Monday asking if anyone was interested in turning double plays with him, which led to responses from Miguel Rojas and Justin Turner, and now Scott Van Slyke asked who the team’s shortstop is before sharing his excitement for Corey Seager:

Even if Ramirez had re-signed with the Dodgers, Seager has been touted as the franchise’s future shortstop. While he was one of three prospects the team refused to include in trade talks last season, Seager is unlikely to replace Ramirez in 2015.

At just 20 years old, Seager got his first taste of Double-A ball after a successful first half of the season with High-A Rancho Cucamonga. The left-handed hitting shortstop began the year with the Quakes and quickly erased memories of him struggling with the team at the end of 2013.

Seager slashed .352/.411/.633 with 18 home runs and 70 RBIs in 80 games with the Quakes and was named California League MVP. He was also one of three Dodgers to receive the Branch Rickey Award, which recognizes the Dodgers’ best Minor League player.

Seager’s height had some speculating he would be moved to third base, though president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said recently he doesn’t envision that being the case. While Van Slyke and others are looking forward to Seager’s eventual debut with the Dodgers, it’s unlikely the shortstop will get a long look next season.

The best-case scenario for Seager would be advancing to Triple-A at some point in 2015 and perhaps being one of the callups when active Major-League rosters expand in September.

  1. Dee, you better get JT to play second and practice throws from short! Can’t be any worse than Hanley. And stop hitting so many fly balls while you’re at it!

  2. Note to the Dodgers…….play Cory….he’s better than his brother with more power.

  3. Why do the Dodgers have a 5 million dollar 2nd baseman if they are going to use him. Give him a shot. give Van Slyke a shot a left move Gordon Too short.
