Sporting News Votes Dave Roberts as Manager of the Year

Fans everywhere were hesitant to welcome Dave Roberts as the new manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Don Mattingly had left a bad taste in the mouths of fans and it was going to take a lot for the rookie manager to be welcomed with opened-arms. Thankfully, Roberts exceeded all expectations.

Dave Roberts was named the National League Manager of the Year by Sporting News on Monday, with Terry Francona earning the title for the American League.

Many are speculating that the official Major League title will go to either Joe Maddon or Dave Roberts, but this is a good sign that the award will be going to the latter.

Dave Roberts simply had so much more adversity to get past than Joe Maddon, from putting 28 players on the disabled list to one of those players being Clayton Kershaw, the best pitcher in baseball.

Dave Roberts was also forced to make some of the toughest decisions this year. Druing the regular season, Roberts made the decision to pull Ross Stripling and Rich Hill in the middle of no-hit baseball late in the game, which no manager wants to do.

However, his decision-making did not get any easier in the postseason. In game 5 of the NLDS, Roberts shocked the world when he used Kenley Jansen and Clayton Kershaw to close out the last 3 innings of the game.

His rookie season as a manager was much harder that it should have been. From dealing with injuries, to making some of the most difficult decisions of the season, he was there to take it all on.

But everything that was just mentioned aren’t even his best qualities. His best quality that makes him Manager of the Year is his ability to maintain a positive clubhouse, always keeping a smile on his face.

Congratulations, Dave, on receiving the NL Manager of the Year Award from Sporting News. Hopefully, this is a good sign that Major League Baseball will give you this honor as well!
