Dave Roberts Addresses Dodgers Issues Winning on the Road

Sometimes you just need a little home cooking to get you back on track and for the Dodgers, they need it badly. After dropping another series on the road this past weekend, the club has now lost four of their past five road series and they have a losing record away from the friendly confines of Dodger Stadium. The team is 17-19 on the road but 20-10 at home so the difference is quite apparent.

Los Angeles went 2-4 over this latest six game road trip, dropping two of three games to both the Cincinnati Reds and Philadelphia Phillies. Prior to this, the team went 4-6 over a 10 game road trip so the results just haven’t been pretty.

“I think if you kind of look at how it’s been on the road, I think it’s been on the run prevention side,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts acknowledged. “I think consistently at home, on the road, we’re putting up runs, giving ourselves a chance to win. But kind of overarching, whether it’s starter, reliever, I think it’s on the run prevention side. That’s something that we’re trying to figure it out and hopefully come up with some answers.

However, there is some hope as Roberts talked about because the team has scored runs. As a team they have averaged six runs per game over the last two road trips but only grabbed six wins due to their pitching issues. The real issue at hand has been the pitching staff, namely the bullpen. Normally a strength of the Dodgers, the bullpen has caused major issues this season and is something that the team needs to address quickly.

Over this most recent road trip, the Dodgers lost on three walk-offs so they can take some positives from that. Fix some minor errors and maybe the results would have been different. Freddie Freeman spoke on this but agreed that the team couldn’t make excuses.

“Three walkoffs (on the road trip). You can always say there were missed opportunities. You can also say we were in every game too,” Freeman said. “Bottom line, nobody wants to hear excuses or anything. We lost four games on the road trip, three of them on walkoffs. … We wanted to win those.”

As the team descends back home for a six game homestand, they need to start picking up wins. They find themselves 3.5 games behind the upstart Arizona Diamondbacks for the NL West lead and if they continue to plague themselves, that deficit will only grow.

Something needs to change when they go on the road because if they want to accomplish their ultimate goal of winning a World Series, they’ll have to win games away from Dodger Stadium.

“You’re still gonna have to play road games. We gotta figure this thing out.”

Whatever the remedy is, they need to deal with it sooner rather than later. Even championship quality teams go through struggles during the season but it’s how they regroup that really defines the heart of a champion.

  1. yet they do nothing to fix the problem, and keep sending the same lousy relievers out game after game and getting the same results.
