Manny Machado Bets Contract Padres Winning World Series Before Dodgers

Manny Machado was acquired by the Dodgers from the Baltimore Orioles prior to the 2018 trade deadline in exchange for a whopping FIVE prospects, headlined by outfielder Yusniel Diaz and relief prospect Zach Pop.

In the off-season as a free agent, Machado signed a 10-year, $300 million mega deal with the San Diego Padres to become their third baseman for the next decade and lead their young core.

The Padres have quite the farm system and a good amount of elite talent has still yet to make its way up to the big leagues. That is an impressive feat considering the likes of Chris Paddack, Fernando Tatis Jr., and Franmil Reyes are making major impacts on their current roster already.

Before the start of the 2019 season, Machado was quick to count out his new team when it came to playoff and World Series hopes.

But now Manny Machado is adamant about the Padres winning a World Series with their future core before the Dodgers win with their current core:

While standing near the on-deck circle at Dodger Stadium on Thursday, Machado shared an exchange of words with a fan in the front row. As the fan heckles that Manny will “get the next 10 Octobers off,” Machado chirped back.

I bet you my contract we’ll win a World Series before you guys do.

Brave words for someone who failed to show up in October, when the Dodgers needed him most.

The exchanged continued as the fan boldly points out that if Manny had stayed with the Dodgers, he could have “won 5 [World Series titles] in 10 years.” But Manny quickly points out “they didn’t want to pay me.”

In the final moments of the conversation, the fan changed his tone and praised Machado’s time with Los Angeles, “I loved you in Dodger blue, man!” Manny replied “so did I.”

On the season, Machado holds a .272 batting average and has crushed 20 home runs while driving in 57 runs after a very slow start.

  1. If he has something to do with a Padres title, the baseball Gods will strike him down before he stinks up the place again like he did last year for the Dodgers. His attitude is a cancer to any clubhouse and his talent is a complete waste. If there is any justice, his words will NEVER come true, and his may his brazen bad attitude about how rules don’t apply to him, due him in.

  2. I am glad the Dodgers didn’t sign Machado. For a guy that was supposed to be one of the most talented players in all of Baseball, I don’t see it.
His time as a Dodger was a bust. He seems to have an attitude when it comes to hustling. As one of the highest paid players in all of baseball, let the Padres have him. I would take Corey Seaver over this loser, any day of the week.

  3. Well, after 6 straight Division titles, as Russo on High Heat pointed out, there is huge pressure now for Dodgers to finally win a WS for 1st time in31 years. with all the $$$ spent and this depth within this team and farm system there really cannot be any more excuses here for not winning one. However the FO and Roberts do have something to do with this with management decisions and how they handle in game stuff, lineups and all. As we saw last year this sitting of hot players due to the handedness of the opposing pitcher is OK during the regular season. But when it comes to the PS and especially the WS, the Dodgers or any other team have a better chance with a more consistent lineup of guys who don’t have noticeably bad splits

  4. The Padres winning the World Series before us, huh? Well, it does not seem that the Padres will be able to take the Division. As such, I think Manny is focused on landing the “Wild Card” and fighting for that National League title. Now I am not saying that the Padres are not working their way to competing competitively. But the madness that is Machado right now would require that the Padres get through the Dodgers, as well as other good teams to get TO the World Series let alone win it. Indisputably, the Padres are talented and young, but they are not World Series material yet. In the interim…..can the Dodgers make it to the World Series and take the World Series as we are? I’d like to think so (as we get our bull pen in order and finesse other areas.) But I must concur that there is significant pressure to win it all soon, specifically with the Machado narrative that his team will beat us to it.

  5. Manny would have the 7th highest batting average on today’s Dodger Team, and well behind 3B-Turner or SS-Seager and .004% behind our current SS. How much do we pay Chris Taylor?

  6. Hey Machado
You say you will bet your contract wished I could take that bet with you. Let’s see what the odds are you winning one a championship with the Padres lol never going to happen you said you’re going to win one before the Dodgers why just look back at the history of San Diego Padres they have been to two World Series and lost both of them so you don’t even have a World Series let me see Dodgers have been the 20 World Series and won 6. I would take that bet never going to win with that team before the Dodgers win
another one. I’m glad you went to the Padres never liked you as a Dodger anyways you didn’t do shit. And the Dodgers never signed you back cuz you sure ain’t worth three hundred million dollars
