Throwback Thursday: Steve Finley’s Walk-Off Grand Slam Vs. Giants

The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants have played plenty of heated, classic games, and one of the more memorable ones came on the second to last day of the regular season in 2004. The Dodgers were hosting the Giants for the second game of a three-game series and began the bottom of the ninth trailing, 3-0.

Shawn Green got the rally started with a leadoff single and the Dodgers then watched as Giants pitcher Dustin Hermanson walked the next three hitters, with the last one pushing one run across. The Dodgers’ second run of the inning scored on an error by Giants shortstop Cody Ransom. Jayson Werth drove in the tying run on a single and the stage was set for Steve Finley to send Dodger Stadium into a frenzy.

Lefty Wayne Franklin was brought in to pitch to Finley, but the center fielder got the better of the match up. Finley sent a letter-high fastball over the right-center field fence for a walk-off grand slam that clinched the NL West title for the Dodgers. Finley was traded to the Dodgers from the Arizona Diamondbacks prior to the trade deadline in 2004. It was the second major move before the deadline by then Dodgers general manager Paul DePodesta. The trades didn’t come without criticism as the Dodgers were sitting in first place of the NL West at the time.

Unfortunately for the Dodgers, the excitement would be short-lived as they lost the NLDS to the St. Louis Cardinals in four games.
