Today In Dodger History: Hershiser Wins 1988 Cy Young Unanimously

November 10, 1988

On this date in 1988, former Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Orel Hershiser was named the NL Cy Young unanimously. He became the ninth pitcher to win the award unanimously in NL history.

Hershiser went 23-8 with a 2.26 ERA and 178 strikeouts for the Dodgers. He led the league in wins, complete games (15), shutouts (8) and innings pitched (267) leading the Dodgers to the playoffs. It would be Hershiser’s first and only Cy Young award in his career. He was also an All-Star that year and won the NL Gold Glove for pitchers. He ended the season on a 59-inning scoreless streak to break Don Drysdale’s record of 58 consecutive scoreless innings.

In the postseason that year, Hershiser was named NLCS MVP and World Series MVP, becoming the first player to win all three awards in the same season. In the NLCS, Hershiser started three games and even recorded a save in another as he came in for the final out in Game 4 after throwing seven innings the day before in Game 3. He threw a complete-game shutout in Game 7 to close out the series. Hershiser then threw a complete-game shutout in Game 2 of the World Series and a two-run complete-game in Game 5 to clinch the series for the Dodgers.

Hershiser would end up playing 13 seasons for the Dodgers and would finish his career in Los Angeles after returning as a 41-year-old in 2000. He was a three-time All-Star with the Dodgers and won the NL Silver Slugger for pitchers in 1993. His 59 scoreless innings streak is still a record and his 1988 performance earned him a spot in Dodger history forever.

After retiring, Hershiser became a broadcaster for ABC and ESPN working the Little League World Series and Major League Baseball. He has been mentioned as a potential replacement in the Dodger booth with the departures of Steve Lyons and Eric Collins.
