VIDEO: Dodgers Int’l Signings, Yasiel Puig Limited At Spring Training

The Dodgers have reported to Spring Training and Friday marks the first full-squad workout. The mystery international shortstop player, CEO Stan Kasten referred to earlier this week, has a name, and it’s a mouthful, Erisbel Arruenbarruena. He’s 23 years old, known for his defense and Yasiel Puig’s former teammate back in Cuba. He played 6 seasons on the Cuban team, as well as in the World Baseball Classic, hitting .375 in 6 games played. The deal isn’t completely finalized and there’s no word on if he’ll head straight to the minors. But, it’s been reported that the deal may be worth close to $25 million dollars.

On the topic of Yasiel Puig, the first official workout hasn’t taken place, but he’s already on a limited throwing program after a shoulder flare-up that occasionally bothered him last season. Don Mattingly isn’t worried, though. Puig mentioned his main focus going into the season is improving his hitting and working on his weaknesses. Not a bad goal for a player that finished his first season hitting .319 with 19 home runs and 42 RBI.

Closing out Dodgers news, today, is that the Dodgers continued their international signing spree by signing 18-year-old, centerfielder, Carlos Mosquera from Panama. According to his scouting report, he’s a switch hitter and an above average runner. He’ll report to Campos Los Palmas in the Dominican Republic and participate in the 2014 Dominican Summer League. So we’ll just have to wait and see.
