Vin Scully News: Petition Started to Award Announcer with Presidential Medal of Freedom

Despite not being able to be heard in 70% of households in the Los Angeles area, all Dodger fans still know that this is the last year we will ever hear Vin Scully again call a Dodger game.

Last month, Scully was honored with his own street and the Dodgers have scheduled the appropriate bobblehead and t-shirt giveaways some time later this season.

But a fan by the name of “J.S.” has gone the extra mile and started a petition for Vin Scully to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Past award recipients have included:

  • Norman Rockwell
  • Walt Disney
  • Audrey Hepburn
  • Sidney Poitier
  • Maya Angelou
  • Frank Sinatra
  • Oprah Winphrey
  • Fred Rogers

So far, the petition has reached only 299 signatures. It will need 100,000 signatures in order for it to get a response from the White House.

White House Petition for Vin Scully

Vin Scully, is quite simply, a national treasure. This year marks his 67th and final season as a Dodgers broadcaster, starting his career when they were the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1950. He is our national pastime’s greatest ambassador, an educator who imparts fans with the wealth of knowledge about the game and its players that he has accumulated over his illustrious career, and the voice of not just Dodger baseball, but all of baseball. No person living today more perfectly symbolizes what is great and admirable about our national pastime, and for this, we request that President Obama honor his indelible contributions to American culture with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

I’m sure this isn’t going to be the last award or honor Vin Scully will be given this season, so let’s support the cause and drop in a signature for the greatest of all time.
