Why Julio Urias Should Relieve Rich Hill in Game 5

Both the Dodgers and Nationals are going all in for Game 5 of the NLDS with a current 2-2 tie. The series all together has been very close, and the latest Dodger News going into Game 5, manager Dave Roberts has chosen Rich Hill to start over rookie, Julio Urias.

In a very close series, a lot comes down to Dodgers’ aces in pitching to assure the Nationals stay down from the beginning. With Hill starting, this does not mean Urias cannot still make an impact out of the bulpen. Dodger fans know how much comes down to the relievers in those last crucial innings of the game.

Let’s not forget, Urias is a rookie and has yet to make a postseason appearance. A veteran like Hill, starting and hopefully the Dodger rumor of Julio Urias closing the game out coming true, is a great strategy.

Though it is his first MLB season, Urias has pitched four innings at National’s Park with 4 strikeouts, 0 walks, and a 2.25 ERA, so he is no stranger to the park. In total against the Nationals, Urias has pitched nine innings with 10 strikeouts, 1 walk, and a 3.00 ERA.

In his rookie season, Urias went 5-2 in 77 innings pitched with 84 strikeouts, 3.39 ERA, and batters hit .274 against him. Not only that, but the 20-year old seemed to get better with every start! His ERA went from 7.36 in the month of July to 1.93 in the month of September!

The rookie pitcher’s numbers are pretty impressive, and coming out of the bullpen in Game 5 may be what the Dodgers need to secure the NLDS win. He has shown that he has the stuff against Washington during the regular season so there is no doubt that he can perform in game 5. Hopefully, Rich Hill does phenomenal so that Urias will not be put in a “save the day” situation to begin with!
