After playing a marathon of a game that began in August and concluded in September, the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants were back in action for the second of their three-game series.

Tuesday’s game was arguably the most anticipated matchup of the series as it featured aces Madison Bumgarner and Zack Greinke. Adding more intrigue to the game, both pitchers hit eighth in their respective lineup.

Fresh off being reinstated from the disabled list, Angel Pagan opened the game with a groundout to Adrian Gonzalez. Greinke then struck out Matt Duffy and got Brandon Belt to ground out. Jimmy Rollins turned on Bumgarner’s second offering, but hooked it down the left field line for nothing more than a strike.

Rollins failed to check his swing two pitches later and struck out. After retiring Jose Peraza, Bumgarner struck out Justin Turner to end a scoreless first inning. Buster Posey reached on an infield single to lead off the second inning, which was followed by a Marlon Byrd strikeout and Alejandro De Aza fly out.

Kelby Tomlinson popped up to shallow right field that Peraza dropped with the error leaving runners on the corners. Bumgarner was unable to take advantage as he popped out in a play that mirrored Tomlinson’s, but Peraza this time made the catch.

After Scott Van Slyke hit a one-out single in the bottom of the second, he was forced out on a Justin Ruggiano grounder. A.J. Ellis kept the inning alive with a flare single that Byrd came up dry on a sliding catch attempt. Nothing came of it however, as Duffy robbed Greinke of at least one RBI by making a diving catch on a line drive.

Rollins struck out a second time on the night in the third, which was an inning Bumgarner ran into some trouble with two outs. Peraza hit a bloop single to right and moved into scoring position as Turner drew a walk. Gonzalez, batting only .135 against Bumgarner heading into the game, hit an RBI single to left field on the first pitch he saw to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead.
