Dodgers News: Adrian Gonzalez to be Activated During Weekend

Rumors are out that Adrian Gonzalez will be activated from the disabled list at some point during the weekend series against the Detroit Tigers.

Adrian Gonzalez has been sidelined with a herniated disk since June, and it was the second trip to the DL for him this year. Up until this year, A-Gon has never visited the disabled list. Gonzalez has been the Dodgers’ run producer and fan favorite for the past couple of years. However this year, his stats had a huge decline that may have lost him his starting job. Cody Bellinger has been playing solid first base and has been hitting home runs at an alarming rate. A rate that Adrian Gonzalez won’t be able to compete against. However, possible solutions include Bellinger going back into the outfield, and sitting either Chris Taylor, Joc Pederson, or Yasiel Puig. Both Chris Taylor and Puig are having career years while Joc Pederson’s batting average creeps ever closer to the Mendoza line.

It may come down to, who will start, Joc? Or Adrian Gonzalez? Both are lefties so that eliminates the platooning possibility. Regardless, Adrian being back in the clubhouse will bring a lot to a team that has many players under the age of 30. We’ve seen in the past young teams add veteran players to their roster for the sake of gaining experience and playoff maturity.  We saw last year when the Cubs won the World Series, many attributed a mass amount of success to veteran David Ross. Maybe between Adrian Gonzalez and Chase Utley, they will have a similar boost.

During his rehab, Gonzalez went just 5-for-26 with a home run over 8 games played. The Dodgers’ hope those numbers improve after a few big league at-bats. A-Gon’s return will be against the Detroit Tigers in Detroit. During his time with the Red Sox, Gonzalez made many appearances in that stadium.
