Dodgers: Bad Defensive Plays Earn LA the Series Loss in Arizona

The last thing the Dodgers wanted to do in Arizona was to go out and lose a series. The way they’ve been playing for most of the season, that should not have happened. But after a tough loss on Tuesday night, they once again handed over the game thanks to a bad play in the field.

After Trea Turner tied the game in the 8th inning, the Dodgers had a chance. But a walk followed by a poor bunt play lead to the Diamondbacks taking the lead and the series. Max Muncy charged in and did not make a clean throw to first base, allowing the run to come across and the runner to advance to third.

After the game, Dave Roberts spoke about the Dodgers sloppy defense. He also added that he thought Gavin Lux could have made the play at first base when he came over to cover. Replay shows that he probably should have come off of the base to stop the overthrow.

“I know Max will say it could have been a better throw. But could Gavin have caught it? Probably. But I don’t know if the out would have been made. But it’s a play we should make nine times out of 10 – 10 times out of 10.”

Regardless of whether or not he should have made the catch, it was an awful play. Lux was at the heart of the defensive issues on Tuesday night as well, throwing away an easy groundball to open the door for Arizona. The Dodgers would go on to lose that game, though the offense in both games also fell completely flat.

Up next, the Dodgers will return home over the weekend to take on the Detroit Tigers in a three-game set. Clayton Kershaw will also be going for the franchise strikeout record as well.

  1. Those last 2 games against Arizona were difficult to watch. I don’t know whats wrong with this team, but they still seem hung over from last year. The Mets and the Giants just had outstanding road trips, and we drop 2 of 3 to the last place Diamondbacks. And the bullpen has let us down big time as well. I know its early, but I have some major concerns.

  2. Max is not a 3rd baseman. He looks very stiff when fielding a ground ball. They should use Rios at 3rd to fill in for JT.

And Lux always throws off balance. They already recognized that in minor league and have never corrected it.
